A primer to digital elements for your business

When I started working for a tech company, I could have written what I knew about the digital world on the head of a pin. What did I do? I learned. I read. I practised. I made mistakes. I tried again. Nothing - but nothing - happens overnight, yet I made progress. With my acquired skills, I helped build that company from $0 to $42 million.

I think my key to success was that I wasn’t afraid of trying and failing, and taking things step by step. I’m encouraging you to have the same approach.
So, I’m asking if you’re you ready to embark on your own digital journey? Today, we're delving into the dynamic world of digital marketing. It might seem a tad overwhelming initially, but this short article will outline all the areas you need to think about. Then, with practice, you'll be navigating the digital landscape like a pro. And, if you need a bit of hand-holding, I’m here to help you.

Unraveling the Basics of Digital Marketing
Let's start with the basics. Digital marketing is simply the art of promoting your business through digital channels—think websites, social media, emails, and more. The goal is  connect with your (unique) audience, boost brand awareness, and, of course, drive sales.

Think of  your online presence as your virtual storefront. It's where potential customers will find you, so let's make it authentic - representing your unique character and values - as well as welcoming and engaging. This is where you build trust and get people to start following you.

Crafting Your Online Presence: Essentials for Your Website
Your website is your digital storefront, and it's often the first interaction people have with your business. If the idea of building a website feels a bit daunting, fear not! User-friendly platforms like WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace can guide you through the process with ease. Or if you want a completely comprehensive system, you might consider ClickFunnels which is the platform I use in my business.

I urge you to keep it really simple. Gone are the days when websites act as lengthy brochures. Visitors don’t have the time or focus to read through swathes of text.

Ensure your website is visually appealing, easy to navigate, and provides only essential information about your products or services. It's your online home, so do all you can to make it inviting. And be sure to make some areas interactive, so that interested customers can be in touch with you.

Cracking the Code of Social Media
Now, let's talk social media. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn can be powerful tools to connect with your audience. Start by choosing platforms that align with your target audience and business goals. For example, if your business is mostly for other business people, LinkedIn may be your priority platform.

Share your story, showcase your products or services, and engage with your audience. Social media is not just a megaphone broadcasting blindly to everyone; it's a conversation. Respond to comments, ask questions, and let your personality shine through. You're building a community, perhaps even starting a movement, not just getting followers.

The Art of Email Marketing
Email might seem old-school, but it's a tried-and-true method of connecting with your audience. Collect email addresses from interested customers (only with their permission, of course) and use email marketing platforms like  Mailchimp or Constant Contact( or within the ClickFunnels system that I use), to keep them updated on your latest offerings.

Share valuable content, exclusive promotions, and news about your business. Email marketing is a direct line to your audience's inbox, creating a personalized connection that goes far beyond social media capabilities.

Harnessing the Power of SEO
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the magic wand that helps your business get discovered on search engines like Google. This is especially important if you’re building your audience organically. Think of it as the roadmap that leads potential customers straight to your doorstep.
Start by incorporating relevant keywords into your website content, creating quality blog posts, and optimizing your website structure. You’re already reading one of MY blog posts, and I bet it got to you through the keywords I chose in my writing.

SEO is an ongoing process, so be patient and watch your business climb the ranks of search engine results. You have to be consistent about publishing your content regularly to be successful. (That’s another entire topic, which I will cover.)

Dipping Your Toes into Paid Advertising
Personally I’m not keen on going for paid ads out of the gate. It gets very expensive very quickly, and you may not have had chance to test your message or your offer yet. However, if you have the budget and you’re looking to accelerate your digital presence, you might consider paid advertising. Platforms like Facebook Ads and Google Ads allow you to target specific audiences based on demographics, interests, and online behavior.

Caution! Start small, experiment with different ad formats, and track the results. Paid advertising can be a powerful tool to reach a broader audience and drive traffic to your website. But you must know how to use it effectively first.

Embrace the Learning Curve
Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and your digital empire won't be either. There are no overnight successes. Take it one step at a time, try different things, and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning and growing.

So, here's to becoming tech-savvy whatever your age,  and embracing the incredible opportunities that digital marketing brings to your business.
